The Ohio Wage and Salary Association was founded in Toledo, Ohio in 1955 by wage and salary professionals who wanted to share best pay practices and wage information. Throughout the 1950s, 1960s, 1970s and much of the 1980s, the organization’s core business focused on compensation. In the late 1980s and into the 1990s, concepts of total compensation (and, later, Total Rewards) were developed and popularized. The original Ohio Wage and Salary Association changed its name twice (Midwest Compensation Association and then the American Compensation Association (ACA). In 1999, reflecting the need to broaden services and audiences, they became WorldatWork.
They offer courses leading to the premier professional designation in seven disciplines of the Total Rewards arena, including that of Certified Compensation Professional (CCP), held by the author.
Once a year usually in May, the annual conference of WorldatWork presents three days if workshops, keynote speakers and opportunities to network with other professionals. Forming relationships with those who work with the same challenges you as a compensation professional face can help you develop professional network and resource that far outweighs the annual membership. Here you can learn about emerging trends from consultant experts, often paired with a client to share the “what went well/what did we learn” about a compensation or benefits initiative. There are also presentations on legal changes going on, technical innovations, and measured trends from survey vendors. Dianne Auld, the acknowledged expert in compensation and benefits analysis, often presents detailed training on getting the most from excel that is geared specifically to compensation and benefits professionals’ data needs. The Exposition Hall, open throughout the conference, is where you can meet vendors, consultants and others who can become trusted partners in your HR activities.
This year, the conference is in Orlando, Florida from May 6 - 8. The list of workshops and presenters is impressive. If you’re serious about conducting your compensation program at the highest level, this is the most education you can get in the shortest amount of time. I highly recommend it for your consideration.
